I know of many foods that are good for the hair. These can indeed work wonders for your hair. How would you like a food that can help you grow your hair back, or a food that has all the nutrients needed for hair health? Aside from a diverse and balanced diet, nutritional supplements can also go a long way toward restoring natural hair growth.
When it comes to hair-friendly foods, nothing can beat salmon that’s rich in fatty acids. Essential fatty acids (EFAs) like omega 3 and 6 support skin and hair growth. As natural hair loss treatments, EFAs are useful in maintaining a healthy hair. By increasing the levels of EFAs, one can slow down hair loss and promote hair regrowth.

What is an essential fatty acid?

EFAs such as linoleic acid (omega 6) and alpha-linolenic acid (omega 3) are said to be “essential” because our system, despite vitally needing them, cannot produce them. An EFA is an unsaturated fatty acid that humans and other animals must ingest for good health and because the body requires them for various biological processes, but cannot synthesize them from other food components.

At the hair system level, omega 6 controls the hair’s water loss, and thus its hydration, whereas omega 3 maintains its elasticity.

What is their role/function on hair?

These blend into the dermic cell’s membranes that surround the hair follicle. Their role is to maintain the scalp’s skin at a proper level of hydration, and to give it elasticity and resistance.

Cement function: EFAs shape the substance that seals the cuticle’s scales. Thus kept together, the scales make for a smooth surface, which enables the hair to protect itself against external aggressions, and to reflect light.

Sponge function: They can also absorb a certain quantity of water coming from the air’s humidity, in order to maintain a regular hydration of the hair stem.

Barrier function: They prevent the water that is inside the hair from escaping.

How do these work as natural hair loss treatments?

Omega-3 fatty acids can help with blood circulation and cell growth, which are useful for hair regrowth. These help to increase nutrient absorption at the hair follicles, reduce stress and enhance the immune system. Deficiencies in EFAs produce symptoms such as dandruff, dry, brittle hair or eczema. All of which may lead to hair loss.

How can I get these nutrients?

Try to eat salmon, sardines, herring or mackerel two or three times a week or sprinkle two tablespoons of freshly ground flaxseeds per day on your cereal or salads. Buy whole flaxseeds, keep them in the refrigerator, and grind enough for a week at a time in a coffee grinder or blender. Omega-3 fatty acids are also abundantly found in fish and olive oil. They are also found in whole grains, fruits and vegetables, garlic and wine. While, omega-6 fatty acids are found in vegetable oils.

Moreover, you may supplement your diet with the essential omega-6 fatty acid called GLA (gamma-linolenic acid) in the form of black-currant oil or evening-primrose oil for hair regrowth. These natural hair loss treatments are available in capsules or soft gels at health-food stores.

Is any study done? Actually, there is no study conducted on omega-3’s beneficial effects for hair growth. But since one needs to be healthy in order to have that amazing healthy hair growth, it can be said that omega-3 helps in hair growth.

Omega-3 is needed or at least a great factor in hair growth since our hair is a hardened protein. Being that, it needs enough supplements of vitamins and other nutrients for a healthier and more beautiful hair growth. Many hair specialists also recommend taking of vitamin-rich food while treating hair to grow faster than the average. Though no certain study proved the efficacy of omega-3 in hair growth, being a good vitamin makes it a necessary nutrient for a better hair.

There is, however, one scientific study in Japan conducted to learn about the effects of fatty acids in fish oil to hair loss. The study concluded that having rich fatty acid intake can help prevent hair loss. Thus, having sufficient fatty acid can help a lot in hair growth.

Although there is still a debate whether omega-3 helps in hair growth with vitamins, it is still considered by many nutritionists as an essential part for healthy living. Though no certain study was done in the relation of omega-3 and hair growth, there are still studies about this nutrient relating to heart and brain. Omega-3 is a proven element helpful for a healthier heart and brain. It even improves intelligence quotient. So, even if omega-3 does not directly improve hair growth, it can still be helpful to anyone.
